Original Store.... Brandon, Manitoba, Circa 1960's
The roots of Black Bond Books, spans over three generations of book lovers of the same family, and over many miles to Brandon, Manitoba.
The original store is depicted above in a wall mural painted by Rick Lee from Surrey from an original photo of the street.
Madeline Neill assumed management of the company in the mid 1960's, and the company has never looked back. The name was derived from the combination of Celia Black, and Catherine Bond, the great grandmothers of current President Cathy Jesson.
Madeline's daughter Cathy joined her in the running of the Brandon store, eventually taking over the management in 1972, when Madeline moved to the BC coast. The first BC location was opened in White Rock that same year. Madeline eventually coaxed Cathy, and her husband, Mel Jesson to move to the coast in 1977, with Cathy opening their second location in Langley. Making it a true family operation, Madeline's other children, Vicky Plett, and Michael Neill, joined the company in ensuing years. This allowed for further growth of the business with locations opening in Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Scottsdale, and Guildford.
Black Bond Books currently has 12 locations through out the Lower Mainland. With the recent opening of our Ladner store, we welcome third generation, Caitlin Jesson, Madeline's grand daughter, and Mel and Cathy's daughter, as manager. Bookselling seems to be in the family blood!
Mel and Cathy Jesson have owned the company since Madeline's retirement. Michael has gone on to develop an online inventory system, utilized by many independent Canadian booksellers, and owns Mosaic Books in Kelowna with his wife, Michelle. Vicky left the company to pursue her passion for sailing, and the challenge of the seas.
Black Bond Books currently has over 100 book lovers on staff, some of whom have been with the company for over 20 years. With Mel as Business Manager, and Cathy shopping North America to find the best book values, they have with the help of their skilled staff, made Black Bond Books what it is today.
